Choosing Seeds for Long Beach’s Coastal Weather

Selecting the right cannabis seeds is a big part of success, especially in Long Beach’s coastal environment. You’ll want strains and seed types suited to our humidity, breezy conditions, and the legal plant limits. Here are some tips on choosing seeds for Long Beach growers:

Feminized Seeds in Long Beach

For most home growers in Long Beach, feminized seeds are the top choice. These seeds are bred to produce only female plants (which grow the bud flowers you harvest). Feminized seeds eliminate the guesswork of sexing plants and ensure you don’t waste time on males that have to be removed. This is ideal given New York’s plant limits – when you’re only allowed 3 mature plants per adult, you want each one to count. By planting feminized seeds, Long Beach cultivators can maximize yields and not worry about a male pollinating the garden. DNA Genetics offers a wide variety of Feminized Seeds ranging from indica to sativa and everything in between, so you can find the perfect strain for your taste and climate.

Autoflower Seeds in Long Beach

Many Long Beach growers also consider Autoflowering seeds for their unique advantages. Autoflower seeds grow into plants that flower on their own based on age, rather than waiting for the seasonal shift in daylight. This means autos will go from seed to harvest in as little as 8–10 weeks, regardless of daylength. In a place like Long Beach, autoflowers can be fantastic – you could start an auto strain in May and have a harvest by midsummer, well before hurricane season or fall rains arrive. Some experienced growers even do two successive auto crops in one Long Beach summer (for example, planting one batch in May and another in July). Autoflowers stay relatively small (often 2–4 feet tall), which also makes them great for discreet balcony grows or backyards with close neighbors. They tend to be hardy and many have been bred with mold resistance, so they can handle the humid nights. Just remember that autos cannot be revegetated or cloned easily, so you’ll need new seeds for each grow. If you value speed and stealth, autoflower seeds are worth a try on the coast.

Regular Seeds in Long Beach

Regular cannabis seeds are the traditional, old-school seed type that will produce a mix of male and female plants. We carry regular seeds mainly for breeders and purist growers who might want to create their own crosses or pheno-hunt for unique genetics. In Long Beach, using regular seeds is less common for casual home growers, because you’ll need to identify and remove male plants early on to prevent pollination. With the legal limits on plant counts, regular seeds can be inefficient – for example, if you can only grow 6 plants and half turn out male, you end up with just 3 females. However, regular seeds do have their place: they allow you to breed or collect pollen, and some classic strains are only available in regular form. If you go this route, be prepared to monitor your plants closely and separate out males as soon as they show. For most Long Beach gardeners, feminized or autoflower seeds will be the easier path, but DNA Genetics provides all options so you can choose what fits your goals.

Long Beach Cannabis Laws: Know Before You Grow

Long Beach growers benefit from New York’s progressive cannabis laws, but it’s important to understand the specifics before you start. Here’s a breakdown of what Long Beach residents need to know about buying seeds and growing at home under New York law:

Is it Legal to Buy Cannabis Seeds in Long Beach? Yes. Under New York’s Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act (MRTA) of 2021, adults 21 and over can legally purchase and possess cannabis seeds. Ungerminated seeds are treated as hemp (they contain virtually no THC), making them legal as adult souvenir products or collectors’ items. In fact, New York law explicitly allows adults to buy and keep cannabis seeds – no medical card or special license required. This means any adult 21+ in Long Beach can order cannabis seeds online or buy them from a licensed dispensary/nursery (as those become available) just like any other legal product. Keep in mind that you should only germinate and grow those seeds within the home cultivation limits described below.

Home Grow Rules in New York: New York allows personal cultivation of cannabis, with some limits. An adult 21+ may grow up to 6 cannabis plants for personal use, with a maximum of 3 mature (flowering) plants at any one time. If multiple adults live in the same household, the household maximum is 12 plants (6 mature flowering, 6 immature) regardless of the number of people. These limits apply statewide, including Long Beach. All home growers must adhere to a few basic rules:

  • Keep your plants private and secure: Cannabis plants must be grown in a location not visible to the public. For outdoor grows, this means your garden should be enclosed or fenced so passersby can’t see in. Indoor growers should avoid putting plants in front of open windows or anywhere easily observed from the street. It’s also required to prevent unauthorized access – especially by minors. If you’re growing on your balcony or backyard in Long Beach, make sure the area can be locked or is otherwise inaccessible to the public.
  • Personal use only – no sales or distribution: Home-grown cannabis is strictly for the grower’s personal consumption. It remains illegal in NY to sell or even give away your homegrown harvest in exchange for any form of compensation. You are allowed to gift up to 3 ounces of flower (or 24 grams of concentrate) to another adult 21+ as a genuine gift with no payment. Just remember: you cannot run any kind of business or barter using cannabis you grow at home.
  • Prioritize safety and compliance: Follow fire codes and safety guidelines if using indoor grow equipment – use proper electrical setups for lights and keep the area ventilated to manage heat and humidity. If you rent in Long Beach, check your lease or talk to your landlord – property owners can prohibit cannabis cultivation on their premises. Always grow responsibly to avoid hazards like mold (which can spread in multi-unit buildings) or fire risks from improper wiring.

As for possession, New York law permits adults to possess up to 3 ounces of cannabis flower (or 24 grams of concentrate) on their person, and to store up to 5 pounds of cannabis at home (as long as it’s kept secure and out of reach of anyone under 21). Consuming cannabis is legal in private and in most places where tobacco smoking is allowed, but you cannot smoke in prohibited areas (no smoking zones, workplaces, schools, etc.) or while driving. By following these rules, Long Beach residents can legally grow a personal cannabis garden and enjoy the results at home without issues. Always stay within the limits and be respectful of those around you, and you’ll find that cultivating under New York’s laws is a smooth process.

Long Beach Climate & Growing Conditions

Located on Long Island’s South Shore, Long Beach has a mild, marine-influenced climate that offers a longer growing season than upstate areas. Understanding the local weather patterns will help you plan a successful cannabis grow. Here’s a look at Long Beach’s coastal climate and what it means for cultivators:

Temperature: Long Beach experiences warm, humid summers and relatively mild winters. The July average high is around 82°F (28°C), with occasional hotter days reaching the 90s. Ocean breezes often take the edge off extreme heat, keeping summer days a bit cooler than inland. Winters are cool but not bitter – January lows average about 25°F (-4°C), which is milder than most of New York. Freezing temperatures do occur, but Long Beach rarely sees the sub-zero cold that upstate regions get. This means the outdoor growing window here is longer. Frost-free season: Typically from mid-April to late October, giving growers roughly 6+ months to work with outdoors. Many Long Beach gardeners transplant cannabis seedlings outside by late April or early May, once the last frost has passed, and can often continue growing into October before the first autumn frost arrives.

Rain & Humidity: Long Beach gets about 45 inches of rainfall annually, spread fairly evenly through the year. Late spring and fall tend to be rainier seasons, and summer brings periodic thunderstorms. Being on the Atlantic, the air often carries high humidity, especially in June through August. Summer humidity can hover in the 70–80% range on many days, creating a muggy environment. These moist conditions mean growers must be vigilant about mold and mildew. Choosing mold-resistant strains and providing plenty of airflow around plants is important (more on that in our tips below). Long Beach also sees about 23 inches of snow each winter, mainly between December and March. Fortunately, snow isn’t a concern during the outdoor grow season, but the occasional late fall storm can bring chilly rain or coastal flooding. Overall, expect a humid climate where moisture management is key for healthy cannabis plants.

Sunlight: This “City by the Sea” enjoys ample sunshine mixed with maritime cloud cover. Long Beach averages around 168 sunny days per year. Summers have long days – in June and July you’ll get about 15 hours of daylight, providing plenty of sun for vegetative growth. However, ocean clouds and sea fog can occasionally roll in, especially in spring and fall, reducing direct sun on some days. Peak sun months are late spring and summer, while early fall can still be quite bright until daylight hours start shrinking. Outdoor photoperiod strains will begin flowering as nights lengthen in late summer. By mid-September, daylight drops enough to trigger bloom in any strains that haven’t already started. Indoor growers or those using greenhouses might supplement light in early spring or late fall to extend growing time, but for most outdoor Long Beach grows, nature’s light cycle from May through October is sufficient.

Coastal Factors: Being right on the Atlantic coast brings some unique considerations – both benefits and potential hurdles. The ocean moderates extreme temperatures, so heat waves are a bit milder and early fall stays warmer than inland (sometimes allowing a later harvest). On the flip side, coastal storms are a reality. Long Beach is vulnerable to tropical storms and the tail-end of hurricanes in late summer and fall. Heavy rain, strong winds, or even salt spray can accompany these storms. Growers should plan accordingly: use sturdy stakes or cages to support outdoor plants against gusty winds, and consider movable containers or protective covers so you can shelter plants during severe weather. Salt in the air can accumulate on foliage near the beach, potentially causing leaf burn – a gentle rinse of your plants with fresh water after a windstorm can help mitigate salt damage. Despite these challenges, many growers find that Long Beach’s sea breeze helps prevent extreme heat stress and can even discourage some pests. In summary, Long Beach’s coastal climate offers warm, sunny growing conditions with high humidity and occasional storms. By selecting the right strains and taking precautions against moisture and wind, you can successfully harvest abundant cannabis on this seaside city.

Growing Tips for Long Beach Gardeners

Growing cannabis in a coastal city like Long Beach presents its own set of opportunities and considerations. Here are some Long Beach-specific cultivation tips to help you make the most of our environment:

Maximize the Growing Season – Start Indoors: One advantage of Long Beach’s climate is a longer frost-free season, so use it to your benefit. To hit the ground running, start your cannabis seeds indoors in early spring (March or early April). By germinating and raising seedlings under a grow light or in a sunny window, you’ll have sturdy young plants ready to move outdoors by late April when the weather warms up. This head start lets your plants take full advantage of the long summer days and potentially grow larger for higher yields. Some growers even take it a step further: thanks to the extended summer, you can squeeze in multiple harvests with fast strains. For example, plant an autoflower seed in May for a midsummer harvest, then follow up with another round that finishes by early fall. However you plan it, starting early (and possibly staggering plantings) ensures you can capitalize on every warm growing day Long Beach has to offer.

Prepare for Salt & Wind: Living by the beach means your garden will occasionally face salty sea air and strong ocean breezes. Cannabis is a hardy plant, but salt and wind can still cause stress. If you’re growing outdoors in a very exposed spot (like on an ocean-facing balcony or an open backyard by the dunes), consider some protection. Using a windbreak (such as a mesh screen or even surrounding your grow with other vegetation) can shield plants from the brunt of salt-laden winds. After any big coastal storm or gale, gently hose off your cannabis plants with fresh water to wash away salt deposits on leaves. Also, secure your plants against wind damage – stake tall plants so they don’t topple, and use soft ties to reinforce branches if needed. By mitigating wind and salt, you’ll help your plants stay healthy and green throughout the season.

Manage Humidity and Mold: Long Beach’s humid summer air can create a breeding ground for mold, especially during the flowering stage when buds are dense. To prevent mold and mildew, focus on airflow and smart watering. Space your plants out so air can circulate around each one – avoid crowding them against walls or fences. Prune excess interior foliage and lower branches that don’t get light; this improves airflow through the canopy and reduces places for moisture to linger. It’s best to water your plants in the morning so that any splashed water on leaves has time to dry by nightfall. If you’re growing indoors or in a greenhouse, use fans and consider a dehumidifier in late flower to keep humidity in check. Keep a close eye on buds as they develop; if you spot any mold (grey or white fuzzy patches, or a browning bud that smells off), remove the affected part immediately to stop the spread. Choosing mold-resistant strains like the ones we recommended (e.g. White Widow or Blue Dream) gives you a head start, but you’ll still want to be vigilant in Long Beach’s climate. A little prevention goes a long way toward bringing clean, healthy buds to harvest.

Optimize Soil and Watering: Much of Long Beach’s native soil is sandy, given our proximity to the beach. Sandy soil drains quickly and doesn’t hold nutrients well, so outdoor growers should plan to enrich it. Consider growing in raised beds or containers filled with high-quality potting mix, or amend your garden soil with plenty of compost and organic matter to improve water retention. Adding perlite can help balance drainage and prevent waterlogging during heavy rains. Speaking of rain – Long Beach gets its share, especially during thunderstorms or the occasional tropical system. Make sure your pots have drainage holes and your beds drain freely so roots aren’t sitting in puddles. Using mulch around the base of your plants is a great trick: a layer of straw or wood chips will moderate soil moisture, keeping the ground from drying out too fast in summer heat and also preventing excess evaporation after you water. Mulch has the bonus of protecting the soil from erosion during downpours. Lastly, be mindful of our tap water quality; Long Beach’s water is safe for plants, but if you notice any chlorine sensitivity, let your water sit out overnight before watering to allow chlorine to dissipate. By giving your cannabis well-prepped soil and consistent watering (not too much, not too little), you’ll develop a robust root system that can support vigorous growth.

Keep an Eye Out for Pests: Coastal gardens can attract a variety of pests, from the common culprits like aphids and spider mites to caterpillars that munch on leaves and buds. Seagulls won’t bother your cannabis, but tiny insects can! Inspect your plants regularly, especially the undersides of leaves and developing buds. If you spot aphids or mites (look for speckles, webs, or tiny moving dots), act quickly with an organic insecticidal soap or neem oil spray to prevent an infestation from taking hold. (Avoid spraying buds directly once they start forming to keep them clean – focus on leaves and stems, or consider introducing beneficial insects like ladybugs to eat the pests.) For caterpillars or budworms, which can be an issue in late summer, a natural BT spray (Bacillus thuringiensis) can keep them at bay without harming beneficial bugs. Also, because Long Beach is an urban area, watch for garden critters like rodents – a curious squirrel or rabbit might dig up freshly planted seedlings or nibble leaves. Using mild deterrents (like garden fencing or natural repellent sprays) can protect your crop. Overall, stay observant and you can catch pest problems early. Healthy, unstressed cannabis plants are quite resilient, so if you’ve followed the other tips (good airflow, proper watering, etc.), your plants will be better equipped to resist bugs and bounce back from minor damage.

Be Discreet and Considerate: Finally, a tip especially relevant to Long Beach’s dense neighborhoods – keep your grow discreet out of respect for neighbors and your own privacy. While it’s legal for adults to cultivate cannabis, not everyone wants to see or smell it. If you’re growing outdoors, think about odor control once your plants start flowering. Some strains can put off a strong aroma (those skunky or diesel notes can carry down the block on a breeze). To mitigate this, you might plant some aromatic companion plants (like lavender, rosemary, or jasmine) nearby to help mask the scent. For indoor growers, a quality carbon filter is a must to scrub smelly air from your grow tent or room. Also, remember the legal requirement to keep plants out of public view – this not only keeps you compliant, but it also means fewer prying eyes on your garden. Long Beach is a tight-knit city, and by keeping your cultivation low-key, you’ll avoid any complaints or unwanted attention. That way, you can enjoy your homegrown cannabis in peace.

Top Cannabis Strains for Long Beach’s Humidity

Long Beach’s humid, breezy climate calls for cannabis strains that are tough and adaptive. Here are some of the top DNA Genetics strains we recommend for coastal growers – each of these is known for resilience and excellent performance in environments like Long Beach:

  • Blue Dream: A legendary sativa-dominant hybrid originating from California, Blue Dream is a favorite for coastal cultivation. It has a proven ability to resist mold and powdery mildew, thanks to its robust genetics (Blueberry × Haze). Blue Dream grows vigorously and can handle high humidity and temperature swings without fuss. Outdoors, it can get tall and deliver very generous yields of sweet berry-scented buds. It’s available in feminized seeds, making it an easy choice for Long Beach growers seeking a reliable, high-yielding strain that won’t succumb to a little sea breeze or summer moisture.

  • White Widow: Known around the world for its potency and resilience, White Widow is a balanced hybrid (about 50/50 indica-sativa) that has repeatedly proven its toughness. Bred in the Netherlands, it was literally created to perform in humid climates – and it shows. White Widow plants exhibit strong resistance to mold and can tolerate the occasional high humidity spikes of our coastal summers. It grows medium in height with a bushy profile, and responds well to pruning and training. Long Beach cultivators will appreciate that White Widow can handle the occasional Atlantic storm blowing through; it bounces back from stress and keeps on flowering. The buds end up frosty white with trichomes, delivering a classic powerful euphoria. It’s a great strain for both indoor and outdoor setups in Long Beach.

Of course, there are many other strains that do well here. But the Blue Dream and White Widow – combine hardiness with high yield and potency, making them especially popular on Long Island’s South Shore. You can find feminized seeds for all of these strains at DNA Genetics, so you can grow them with confidence. Pairing the right strain with Long Beach’s environment is a recipe for a successful grow.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We answer some of the most frequently asked questions about DNA Genetics below. Unsure about where to find the best quality cannabis seeds? Discover why we’re a trusted, highly experienced seed bank with our extensive insight.

COMMON FAQ'S

Yes. Cannabis seeds are legal to purchase and possess in New York for adults 21 and over. They are classified as hemp (since they contain no THC until germinated), making them legal as collector’s items or souvenirs. You don’t need any special card to buy seeds in Long Beach. Just remember that you can only germinate and grow them within the state’s home cultivation limits (up to 6 plants per adult, at home).

New York’s home cultivation law lets each adult (21+) grow up to 6 cannabis plants for personal use. Only 3 of those can be mature (flowering) at any one time. There’s also a household cap: no more than 12 total plants per residence, regardless of the number of adults living there. So in a Long Beach home with two or more adults, the max is 12 plants (with up to 6 flowering). Stay within these limits to remain compliant.

Generally, you’ll want to move your cannabis plants outdoors in late April or early May in Long Beach. By that time, the risk of frost has passed (average last frost is in early April) and nighttime temperatures are mild enough for young plants. Many growers start seeds indoors in March/April, then transplant outside around May 1st. If you’re planting directly outdoors, wait until soil has warmed up by May. Outdoor harvest usually occurs by late September through October, depending on the strain. Plan to harvest by late October at the latest, since that’s when colder weather and autumn storms can roll in.

Both feminized and autoflower seeds can do great in Long Beach – it depends on your goals. Feminized seeds are ideal if you want the biggest yields per plant and don’t want to worry about removing males. They will grow based on the natural season (flowering when days get shorter) and can get quite large outdoors, giving you a heavy harvest in the fall. Autoflower seeds are fantastic for faster, smaller grows: they’ll automatically flower after a few weeks and can be harvested in mid-summer, avoiding the fall weather entirely. You can also grow autos and fems together – for instance, an autoflower for a quick summertime crop and a feminized photoperiod plant for a big fall harvest. Beginners often start with feminized seeds for the simplicity, but if you’re eager for quick results or have a very limited space, give autos a try.

Absolutely – we ship to Long Beach and anywhere in New York State where adults can possess seeds. Since we’re a U.S.-based seed bank, shipping is very quick. Once you place your order, we typically process and dispatch it within 1–2 business days. Packages are sent via USPS and usually arrive in Long Beach in about 2 to 5 business days. Many customers in NY get their seeds in as little as 3 days. All orders are packed discreetly (plain mailing envelopes or boxes with no mention of DNA Genetics or cannabis), so you can receive your shipment confidently and privately.

We’ve got you covered. DNA Genetics offers a germination guarantee on our seeds. As long as you follow our recommended germination method (which we outline on our website), if any seed fails to sprout, we will replace it free of charge. Just reach out to our customer support team, and we’ll arrange for replacement seeds. We’re committed to your success – our goal is that every seed you buy from us turns into a healthy plant.

Cannabis plants can get quite fragrant, especially during flowering. In Long Beach’s close-knit neighborhoods, odor control is important. If you’re growing indoors, use a carbon filter in your grow tent or exhaust system – this is the gold standard for neutralizing cannabis smells. Additionally, make sure your grow space is well-sealed (no gaps where air leaks out without filtration). For outdoor grows, you have to get a bit creative: planting aromatic herbs and flowers around your cannabis can mask some of the smell. Lavender, mint, basil, and jasmine are strong-scented companion plants that can help diffuse the aroma. You can also invest in odor-neutralizing gels or sprays placed strategically around your outdoor area, which can absorb or counteract the smell. Finally, be mindful of wind direction – if your plants are downwind of a busy area, consider moving them or creating a barrier. Good odor control keeps neighbors happy and your garden low-profile

DNA Genetics has a long-standing reputation as one of the best in the business. We offer proven, award-winning strains that have been refined over years – so you know you’re getting top quality genetics. Our seed quality is backed by the germination guarantee, meaning we replace any duds. Customers also love our fast U.S. shipping (no waiting for overseas packages) and the care we take to pack orders discreetly. On top of that, we reward our customers with loyalty points and frequent deals, which many competitors don’t match. And if you ever need help with an order, our customer service is responsive and knowledgeable. In short, we provide a level of quality, reliability, and service that sets us apart – when you grow with DNA Genetics seeds, you’re setting yourself up for success.

DNA Genetics is proud to serve not only the city of Long Beach, but also the surrounding communities along Long Island’s South Shore. Whether you’re located in Long Beach itself or nearby areas like Atlantic Beach, Lido Beach, East Atlantic Beach, Island Park, Oceanside, or Rockville Centre, we’ve got your cannabis seed needs covered. We know that growers throughout Nassau County – from the barrier island to the mainland – are looking for reliable genetics and a seed bank they can trust. DNA Genetics happily ships directly to all these neighboring areas and more. So if you’re in the 5 Towns area, the Rockaways, or anywhere in the vicinity of Long Beach, you can count on us for fast delivery and top-quality seeds. Our mission is to help growers across the entire region succeed. From the city by the sea to the greater New York metro, DNA Genetics is here to help you succeed in your cannabis growing journey.

Shipping Seeds Across New York and Beyond

No matter where you are in New York or the United States, DNA Genetics can likely ship cannabis seeds to you. We don’t just serve Long Beach – we’re a national seed provider. We currently ship to most U.S. states where ungerminated cannabis seeds are legal to possess. This includes nearly all states with legal medical or adult-use cannabis, such as New York, California, Michigan, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Illinois, Massachusetts, Florida, Arizona, and many others. Essentially, we cover almost the entire U.S., with only a few exceptions (at this time we do not ship to Idaho, Kansas, or Kentucky due to local restrictions). If you’re unsure about your state, feel free to contact us – but generally, adult hobby growers across the country can order from DNA Genetics without hassle.

Because we ship from within the USA, you won’t be dealing with customs or long international transit times. East Coast customers especially love how quickly our packages arrive. We’ve successfully delivered seeds to all corners of the country, from big cities to rural towns. So even if you have friends or family outside Long Beach who want to start growing, we’ve got them covered too (as long as they’re in a state where it’s legal). DNA Genetics is committed to being your trusted source for cannabis genetics, no matter where you are. We bring the same level of quality and care to every order, whether it’s headed to New York or beyond.
